Decorating the Garden Wall

24 November 2009 199 views No Comment

If you have a dry wall, consider using it as a garden wall. This will increase its beauty and also its strength. By planting herbs, shrubs and ground cover in the wall’s crevices, the wall can get that whole mossy look. You can also plant flowering plants to add color to the wall. Not just this, the flowering plants that have strong roots, will in fact help increase the wall’s strength.

Plants which can be used with the garden wall are- flowering plants like evergreen candytuft, heather, garden pinks, creeping veronicas; spreading plants like lavender, moss, hardy verbenna; plants that need sun and room for roots like dwarf iris, dwarf pinks and yarrow; and plants that grow from seeds sown in the rocks. Seed sown plants include bleeding heart, some ivies and phlox.  Dwarf azaleas and azaleas, keep the rock wall green all winter.

Now, let’s talk about decorating that garden wall of yours. You can use decorative pieces that are made out of copper, brass, terracotta and even fiberglass. You might also want to have bird houses/bird feeders that can be mounted on the wall. Oh and let’s not forget those gorgeous garden wall fountains! These fountains are great for small yards too, where there is not enough room for a stand-alone fountain.

Garden wall fountains

Most of the modern garden wall fountains don’t have any special plumbing requirements. Water in these fountains recirculates from the basin, up through the back. Finally, it flows down the decorative facade of the fountain, back into the basin. The pump that is used is generally similar to an aquarium pump. The two things that you need to consider while choosing the fountain pump are its speed and noise. It is best to go for pumps that have a variable speed and don’t produce too much noise. After all, you want to hear the sound of the water, and not the pump. The most popular materials that are used to make garden wall fountains are fiberglass, copper and cast stone.

In short, remember that a garden wall is not a stand-alone feature. It is a part of your garden and, it can give your garden landscape more personality. There are no rules, when it comes to decorating your garden wall.
